I saw this large female Sparrowhawk devour a Woodpigeon by the side of the road at Kenidjack yesterday. I photographed the event from the car. I think it must have been hungry as the pigeon was consumed inside 15 minutes!

On a mission
I took this shot back in May at Walmsley Sanctuary - I was transferring some images to disc to clear the hard drive and had forgotten about this Sparrowhawk with intent in her eyes. A Sedge Warbler was singing on the blind side of the island in front of the hide. The Sparrowhawk flew into the foliage but appeared on my side without a kill. I took a burst of shots and this was the best one in focus just before the vegetation spoilt the view.Thursday, 30 October 2008
Common Snipe escapes from Sparrowhawk
Some images of Snipe today at the edge of the juncus. The crouching behaviour happened as a big female Sparrowhawk was lurking in the immediate area. No kills were witnessed but the Sparrowhawk was quite content to stay on this rock for a minute or so and rue what could have been a tasty breakfast! All images taken from the hide with Nikon 600mm F/4. Aperture F/4. Exposure 0.0 WB set to Cloudy. ISO 800.
